Even though Xperia Z3 is available only from a short period of time, those of xda-developers already managed to bring a custom recovery image for it. Thus, by using the TWRP recovery custom recovery image provided in this tutorial you can easily learn how to replace the stock recovery image from your Sony Xperia Z3 with a custom one. So, bottom line you can start learning how to tweak your new Android based device. Therefore, if you want to read more about this subject, don’t hesitate and check the guidelines from below.

Why to install TWRP recovery on your Xperia Z3? Well, the first reason to think is the root one. For now, you can only gain root access only if your phone is running on a custom recovery image. Thus, replacing the stock recovery with a custom one is a must. But, ensuring root is not the only reason why you should complete this step by step guide. Once TWRP recovery is flashed on your Android device, you will be able to customize, optimize and personalize your Sony Xperia Z3 – in a few words your device will become your new playground.

Bottom line, here is what you can do when using TWRP recovery: unlock your phone, wipe system and clear cache, make Nandroid backups, install custom ROMs, flash custom kernels, remove bloatware, overclock CPU, add new features, install custom apps and software, improve the battery life, bump the speeds and lot more. As you can see, completing this tutorial isn’t an option, especially if you are an advanced Android user.

But what is TWRP recovery and how can you use it on your Sony Xperia Z3? Like any other custom recovery image, TWRP recovery is a third party app developed by third party devs. The software comes to replace the stock recovery as the same is pre installed with various restrictions – your access is limited. So, if you want to unleash the full potential of your device, you need to install a custom recovery image. This image is a hidden menu that comes like a default feature on any Android powered smartphone or tablet. Accessing this menu is easy as you only have to use a combination of hardware buttons – more details are being explained below.

Now, TWRP recovery is the touch and improved version of CWM recovery – one of the most popular custom recovery that is available for the Android system. The software works without bugs or other problems on the Xperia Z3, so you will not have issues when trying to perform your favorite custom operations.

Of course and as you can already tell, installing TWRP Recovery implies in completing an unofficial process that has nothing to do with Sony or with Google. That’s why the warranty of your Xperia Z3 will get void – you will not be able to reclaim the warranty when taking your phone back to service (if that will be necessarily) and you will have to pay for the technical inspection – thus most likely, if something bad happens, you will have to manually fix your bricked Android smartphone.

A custom operation is risky and complex. So you need to read all the lines from this guide in order to make things work properly and for avoiding unpleasant situations. And the first thing to start with is a backup. Yes, it is necessarily to save your personal data, info and accounts before doing anything else, because you can end up in losing everything that’s saved on the internal storage memory of your Xperia Z3. In that matter, you can use backup and restore apps from Google Play, or a cloud storage service for saving the contacts, call logs, market apps, texts, internet settings, videos, images or audio files.

Since this is a manual installation guide, for being able to complete the same you will have to use a computer or notebook. On that computer you also have to temporarily deactivate the security protection as the antivirus or antimalware programs might interfere with our work. Afterwards, from your phone (path “menu – settings – developer options”) you need to enable the USB debugging option – else you won’t be able to connect your handset with your computer. Finally, you need to charge your Xperia Z3 – do that as if your phone will get turned off in the middle of the flashing process, it might also get bricked.

Apply the following guidelines only if you own the Sony Xperia Z3. The TWRP recovery file which is provided below is compatible only with the mentioned smartphone – so using these steps for another device will probably make you damage your phone or tablet. Moreover, make sure that your Sony device is having an unlocked bootloader before proceeding.

How to Install TWRP Recovery on Sony Xperia Z3

  1. On your computer install the Xperia Z3 USB drivers.
  2. On the same computer install ADB and fastboot: install Android SDK on Windows or set up ADB on MAC OS X / Linux.
  3. Finally, download TWRP recovery on your computer from here.
  4. Copy the .img file you have just downloaded on the same folder as fastboot.
  5. From the fastboot folder open a command prompts window (navigate to the mentioned folder and from there press and hold Shift keyboard key while right clicking on any blank space).
  6. Turn off your phone completely – press power button and select “power off” or press and hold power key for a few seconds.
  7. Then press and hold Volume Up button while connecting your Xperia Z3 with your computer – fastboot mode will be displayed on your device.
  8. On the cmd window type: “fastboot devices” followed by “fastboot flash boot bootZ3monxtest01.img”.
  9. Wait while TWRP recovery is being applied.
  10. In the end, on the same cmd window enter “fastboot reboot”.
