The Lite variant of Xiaomi Mi 8 can be now better customized and optimized as an unofficial build of TWRP recovery was succesfully installed by those of xda-developers. So, thanks to senior member AL_IRAQI, we can now replace the stock recovery image that runs by default on the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite with TWRP recovery and gain further control over the Android UI. Well, in that respect we are here to explain the flashing process that must be followed for setting up this new custom recovery platform, further details being offered during the guidelines from below.

The Mi 8 Lite is not the most powerful Xiaomi branded device, but it does offer decent performance on an appealing price tag. And, with the right tweaks applied you can improve the default performance and obtain better results even when complex apps and processes are being installed and initiated. Therefore, if you are an advanced user you should start customizing your smartphone by replacing the stock recovery with TWRP recovery.

Why should you choose to do that? Mainly because that’s how you can start controlling the Android system – through TWRP recovery you can access and then modify built-in apps, processes, features and capabilities. Aditionally, from a custom recovery image you can initiate different tweaks through dedicated custom operations in order to upgrade the performance offered by your Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite.

And, here are a few examples of custom operations that can be applied from TWRP recovery: you can easily gain root access by flashing root exploits; you can remove bloatware and start-up programs; you can make Nandroid backups for saving the current Android OS; you can install custom features and apps along with tools from other sources than Google Play; you can set up custom MODs and kernels; you can flash custom ROMs like Lineage OS, AOKP or Paranoid Android; you can overclock / undervolt your Android device; and lot more else.

However, installing TWRP recovery is not an official operation – the custom recovery tool is developed by third party devs and cannot be associated with Xiaomi or with Google. Thus, if you choose to apply the steps that are explained below you are going to lose your Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite warranty. The warranty flag can be restored only if you reinstall the stock Android firmware, when you will manage to restore your handset back to its factory state.

A backup should be completed on your Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite before starting the TWRP recovery installation process – you should save what’s important for you as otherwise you can end up in losing stuffs like contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, saved passwords, EFS folder, IMEI / NVRAM data and similar other packages. For being able to apply a proper backup you should use Xiaomi’s built-in cloud storage services. Aditionally you can sync your data with your Google Account or you can save your files by using dedicated and already tested backup and restore apps from Google Play.

This will be a manual process and the steps explained below can be applied only if a computer can be used. On that computer the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite drivers must be installed and then you have to set up Android SDK: if you don’t know how, learn how to install Android SDK on Windows or how to set up ADB on MAC OS X / Linux.

During the TWPR recovery flashing process you will have to connect your Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite with your computer. So, on your smartphone you first have to check the USB Debugging option – you can do that from Menu - > Settings - > Developer Options. Hint: for enabling Developer Options go to About Phone and tap repeatedly on Built Number until the ‘you are a developer’ message is displayed.

And you must verify the power that’s left on your phone because if your device runs on low power you first have to plug in the chager – do that if the power left is lower than 50%. If a sudden shut down occurs your Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite might get soft-bricked while the custom recovery image is being installed, so try to avoid such unpleasant situations.
