Motorola just released the second gen. of Moto E, a great budget friendly Lollipop powered smartphone. Well, if you are now using the 2015 variant of Moto E, it’s also the perfect time to start learning how to properly manage the Android system that powers your device. Why should you do that? Mainly because this is how you can customize, optimize and personalize your phone, not to mention about other custom operations. So, the first to learn about is rebooting your new Moto E into recovery mode.

Therefore, if you choose to use this step by step guide you can learn everything that’s related to the recovery mode term, you can see how to enter this environment and also how to use it for completing other Android dedicated operations right on your new Motorola Moto E.

So, first of all, you should know that your 2015 Moto E comes pre installed with the stock recovery mode. This hidden environment can be therefore used by default on your smartphone. What operations can you complete using stock recovery mode? Well, you can perform any task you want as long as you keep it official – the stock recovery limits your access, thus you won’t be able to perform unofficial or custom operations such as flashing custom ROMs, make Nandroid backups, installing custom kernels, removing bloatware, ensuring root access or overclocking the Moto E.

Bottom line, the recovery environment establishes a link between you and your phone’s internal system. Therefore, rebooting your new Moto E into recovery mode is a must when you need to resolve tasks that involves in optimizing or modifying in built apps, or default features. That’s why, if you want to take things to a higher level of performance, you need to replace the stock recovery with a custom software like CWM or TWRP recovery – with a custom recovery image you will then be able to easily and safely tweak your Motorola Moto E 2015.

The best is that rebooting recovery mode on your second gen. Moto E can be achieved in the same way whether we are talking about stock or custom recovery software. Moreover, the steps from below are also compatible with rooted or locked devices or with phones that runs on stock Android OS or on a custom ROM firmware. Finally, as already pointed out, the reboot sequence is an official operation, so reaching and using recovery will not imply in using risky tools or procedures – you will keep it all official so the warranty of your 2015 Moto E will not get void if you choose to apply this dedicated step by step guide.

However, when installing a custom recovery image the warranty will get void; actually the same thing will happen if you will apply any other custom operation, so be careful in what you perform – the unofficial procedures are recommended only for advanced Android users who are experienced with customization procedures.

Also, if you are planning in putting your new Moto E into recovery mode for completing another custom operation, before doing anything else, backup your data and charge your smartphone (especially if the battery power is lower than 50% - else your phone might get turned off and bricked in the middle of the operation). The backup is only optional but strongly recommended – during some custom operations a wipe is applied, so you can end up in losing all of your personal data, info and accounts – just use backup and restore apps from Google Play, a cloud storage platform or any other similar tool in order to ease your work.

How to Reboot Moto E 2015 Recovery Mode with Ease

Use Hardware buttons

  1. The first thing to do is to turn off your 2015 Moto E.
  2. After that, press and hold simultaneously Power, Volume Down and Volume Up buttons.
  3. Keep pressing these keys until the boot menu shows up.
  4. From there use volume up and down buttons to navigate and power key to select.
  5. Highlight the recovery option and select the same.
  6. The Android logo will then be displayed on your phone.
  7. When it does press and hold volume up and down buttons for about 4 or 5 seconds and then press power key once (while still pressing volume up and down).
  8. Voila, the recovery mode menu will now be displayed on your new Motorola Moto E.
  9. You can go back to Android OS by choosing “reboot system now”.

Use a dedicated tool

If the above mentioned method isn’t working for you, then you can access Google Play, from where you should search and download the Quick Boot app. Install the tool on your phone and when ready launch the same. Follow on screen prompts, select the Recovery option and just wait while the mentioned environment is being automatically rebooted on your phone.

Set Up ADB Commands

In order for this method to work you will have to use a computer, your new Moto E and your phone’s USB cable. Now, on the computer you are using you should first install Android SDK: install Android SDK on Windows or set up ADB on MAC OS X / Linux. Then, on your phone enable USB debugging option by going towards “menu – settings – developer options” – if Developer Options isn’t displayed first go to “menu – settings – about phone” and tap several times on built number. When done, connect your Moto E 2015 with your PC and within the Android SDK folder open a command prompt window; in the cmd window then type “adb reboot recovery”. That’s it, recovery mode will be booted on your Android device.

So, there you have it; that’s how you can enter recovery mode on your new Motorola Moto E (the 2015 variant of the smartphone).
