The Motorola Defy and Defy+ are two low range Android based smartphones with outdated specs and features, so its users might want to improve the performances and why not enjoy a better Android experience on their own devices. Well, you can do all that by updating your phone with a custom ROM firmware, the present tutorial taking you through the installation procedure of the same. So, we will be checking on how to update the Motorola Defy / Defy+ with the ICS 4.0.4 based MIUI v4 custom software, this being the latest Android based ROM available for your device.

If you are wondering if your handset is capable to run a powerful custom ROM (as you know there won’t be any further OTA updates released by Motorola for your Defy and Defy+ due to hardware limitation), the answer is yes, because the MIUI software had been optimized and customized by those of xda-developers in order to smoothly work on your smartphone. Therefore, use this step by step guide only for flashing the ICS 4.0.4 based MIUI custom ROM on the Motorola Defy or Defy+, or else you will risk in bricking your device. The present software will work only on the mentioned phones.

As mentioned, the MIUI v4 ROM has been developed and released by those of xda-developers so we have them to thanks for this tutorial. Furthermore, the same means that we are dealing with a custom ROM firmware and not with a stock Android OS. Because of that, by flashing the MIUI platform on your Defy / Defy+ you will be able to get extra features and capabilities that cannot be found in the default version of the Android system. Also, this firmware is based on the CM9 software, so features from the same will be ported to your device.

Now, here is what you need to know: first once the MIUI v4 ROM will be applied, you will be able to access the internal system of your smartphone. So, you can remove inbuilt programs, customize and optimize the system in order to gain more speed from your Defy / Defy+. Also, the battery life will be improved and a customized Android 4.0.4 ICS OS will be installed. If you want to learn more about this software and about its features, check out our source page (you have the link here). Then, return here and read the next lines where you will learn how to update the Motorola Defy or Defy+ with MIUI firmware.

Due to the fact that this is a custom ROM, there must be performed some preparation tasks before actually installing the software. Without taking care of the essential and general pre requisites you will not be able to flash the MIUI OS. So, first of all backup the Defy, or Defy+ data. As you will see a little bit later, a wipe must be applied therefore all of your personal saves will be erased. Also, a backup operation is being recommended before each complex procedure, so don’t skip this section.

After backing up the data, root the smartphone. The ROM will have to access some files from the internal system of your device, and this access can be granted only by rooting the phone. The warranty will get void, so be careful in what you do (you can restore the lost warranty by downgrading to stock OS, or if you reset the flash counter). Furthermore, a rooted system will let you install a custom recovery image, which is the next thing that you must complete before heading to the updating process.

Those were the essential pre requisites, so now it’s time for the general ones. Here, you just need to ensure that you can use a computer or notebook. On the same you will download the update file, which will then have to be transferred to your Defy / Defy+. Because of that your phone’s USB cable must be near you. Now, on both computer and device deactivate the security programs, antivirus or Firewall protection being included. Enable the USB debugging option on your handset and charge its battery; else the smartphone might get turned off in the middle of the flashing process, meaning that you will risk in bricking it.

Remember that this guide is being suitable only with the Motorola Defy and Defy+, so do not install the ICS and CM9 based MIUI v4 custom ROM by using the next steps on a similar device because you will end up in bricking your Android powered smartphone.

Thanks for the guide, I managed to update my ancient 2.1 firmware.

The only issue I had was getting a custom recovery because the stock recovery on defy didn't have the "install zip from sd card" and the ones in the store didn't support android 2.1 or defy. I needed to install the 2nd Init bootmenu (search for "sndinit 1.9 apk"). Then I downloaded cwm ("rom manager") from store and installed version 3 (be warned, it's not officially supported on defy). Afterwards, I downloaded and installed "com.kb7sqi.defy.bootstrap.old.apk". That changed my recovery and gave me the option to manually select a zip to install from sdcard.

Also, install the battery fix. My battery went from 5% to 1% in 5 mins, then stayed there for over an hour before it finally shut down (while the battery monitor's estimation increased from 45 min to 1 hour).
