How to Update OnePlus 3T to Android 9.0 Pie with GZOSP custom ROM firmware

Are you ready to test the latest Android software on your OnePlus 3T? Yes, we’re talking about the Android 9.0 Pie firmware, and no, we’re not referring to an official OnePlus roll out as that might happen only next year, sometimes during January. So, we’re reviewing a new custom ROM platform developed by those of xda-developers and through which you can successfully install the Android Pie functionality on your own OnePlus 3T. Thus, for further info on this matter don’t hesitate and read all the lines from below.

The GZOSP custom ROM is developed by those of xda-developers so we have to thank them for this new Android 9.0 Pie update opportunity that’s now available for the OnePlus 3T. So, right from the start it should be clear for you that we cannot associate this firmware with your OEM. This is nothing but a ported version of the stock Android UI and like any other ported Android ROM it cannot be OTA received or rolled out – you are going to complete an unofficial flashing procedure during which the warranty of your handset will get lost; the warranty flag can be restored only if the official Android software is reinstalled.

Now, the GZOSP custom ROM is stable enough for a daily use on your OnePlus 3T. However, this Android 9.0 Pie firmware is still under development stage which means that you can experience minor issues such as bugs, lags or screen freeze while you try to use basic Android features on your device. Anyway, you shouldn’t worry as the dev is currently working on fixing all the reported malfunctions. Of course, do test this custom ROM on your phone only if you are an advanced or experienced user who is used with unofficial update operations.

Your smartphone must be powered by an unlocked bootloader as otherwise the official Android OS cannot be replaced with the GZOSP custom ROM software. Moreover, root access must be enabled on your OnePlus 3T since the new firmware will have to modify built-in settings, features and apps. And finally, a custom recovery image must run on your handset as through that environment the actual flashing procedure can be completed – so, in that respect first install TWRP recovery on your device.

Making a Nandroid backup first shouldn’t be optional. In that way you can save the current Android OS that runs on your OnePlus 3T. So, if the Android 9.0 Pie powered GZOSP custom ROM will not run properly you will be able to choose to go back to stock easily, by reinstalling the Nandroid backup package from recovery mode.

A general backup should also be applied as a custom ROM can be set up only if a hard reset if first completed. Therefore, if you don’t choose to use your favorite backup and restore solutions you are going to lose your personal data, info, accounts and files including essential stuffs such as contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, saved passwords, EFS folder or IMEI / NVRAM data. On your OnePlus 3T you can easily secure your personal files by syncing your data with your Google Account, by using an external storage device, by using built-in cloud storage apps, or by downloading third party backup and restore apps from Google Play.

A computer is needed as there you have to download the required files – the GZOSP custom ROM package and compatible Google Apps. Google Apps aren’t pre-loaded on this Android 9.0 Pie software so that’s why this package must be flashed separately.

Your OnePlus 3T and its USB cable will be also needed as a connection between your phone and your computer will be required. On your phone you have to check the USB Debugging option which can be found under Menu – > Settings – > Developer Options. Note: for gaining developer rights in the first place go to About Phone and tap repeatedly on Built Number: after 7 or 10 repeated taps you will notice the ‘you are a developer’ message displayed on your handset.

Charge your OnePLus 3T before updating to Android 9.0 Pie via GZOSP custom ROM. Do that especially if the power left is currently lower than 50%. If you don’t do it your phone might get turned off while you try to apply the steps from below and then different software related issues might be cause – you can end up in soft-bricking your Android based device.
