Update Virgin Mobile USA Galaxy S8 to Android 8.0.0 Oreo Manually with ODIN

The official Android 8.0.0 update is officially being rolled out over-the-air for all the Samsung Galaxy S8 users on Virgil Mobile USA.

Check the info in this post in order to learn how to manually install this new firmware for your smartphone.

The new official update is being rolled out in stages and over-the-air, but not everyone will get the firmware files at the same time. You can install the new Android 8.0 Oreo Update for your Virgin Mobile USA Galaxy S8 phone using the ODIN tool before the update reaches your region.

In case you don’t want to manually update your device, then you can wait for Virgin Mobile to roll out the new OTA Android 8.0 Oreo Update files in your region. You can also manually check for new firmware update right from your device’s Settings menu: go to Settings> Software update> Download Updates manually. If a new firmware is ready for download you simply need to confirm the process and your Galaxy S8 Viring Mobile USA device will take care of the rest of the process by itself.

Note that these official updates won’t be pushed for your phone in case you’ve modified its installed stock ROM in any way. It should still be available in case you’ve only rooted the phone and left the whole ROM unmodified.

Before starting the update process you need to check the following guidelines.

Preparation Steps:

Use this tutorial only if you are an advanced user. We cannot be blamed if you brick the phone nor in case you lose any data files.

Read the entire post first and do not skip any steps.

This guide has to be applied only for the Samsung Galaxy S8 devices on Virgin Mobile USA. The model version of your phone has to be the SM – G950U. Don’t use the guide below for other different models.

For the update process you will use the ODIN tool.

For Odin to work and connect with your phone you will have to install the Samsung USB Drivers from here. Install the drivers on your PC.

Also, enable the USB Debugging from Developer Options menu. If you cannot find Developer Options you need to enable that first: go to Settings> About Phone> Software Info and tap seven times on the Build Number text.

Return to Settings, as Developer Options menu will now be listed there. Open Dev Options, find USB Debugging and enable that.

If you’re running a stock rooted firmware, then you can flash the update without losing any data files. NOTE: root access will not survive the install. Also, any custom Recovery you might have flashed will be reverted back to Stock Recovery.

Android 8.0.0 Official Update firmware can be flashed by ODIN 3.13.3 over a custom ROM, but you will have to Factory Reset the phone after the update is done. That will make sure the phone boot in normal mode with the new OS.
The Factory Reset process steps are listed at the end of the tutorial, and you should apply in case you install the update over a custom ROM.
The Factory Reset won’t delete any data files from internal storage, as it only formats the system partition.

If your phone runs 100% stock Android firmware, then you won’t lose any data files and you can start the update any time you want.

Check the battery charge levels and make sure that there is at least 50% charge left before the device switches off.

If the FAIL message is shown by ODIN, then you will be forced to repeat the entire tutorial more than once. If you repeat installation you need to make sure that you won’t skip any steps, and that your phone meets all requirements.

If the PASS message is shown by ODIN, but the Galaxy S8 enters in a boot loop, or it gets stuck at the boot animation screen for more than 20 minutes without doing anything, then you will have to factory reset the device.

The Factory Reset steps below should be applied by those that have installed the official update over a custom ROM, too. Here’s how to factory reset the device:
